ZUMAYA IN EUROPE
The project Zumaya in Europe, shows the repertoire of the Mexican composer Manuel de Zumaya and the theory of his journey to Europe between 1700-1708. The European influence that the journey had on the young Zumaya is revealed on his return to the Metropolitan Cathedral in México city, where he premiered the Parténope with the same librettist as Antonio Vivaldi, Silvio Stampiglia.
This production was the first complete opera to be premiered in North America and the first written by a composer born in the New World.
ZUMAYA'S TRAVEL TO ITALY
The influence of his journey is reflected in the innovations present in his compositions after 1708, such as his cantatas where he implements the use of two violins in the Italian style. These were the first pieces created in America to include such orchestration.
The Zumaya project in Europe comprised a collection of cantata works by Manuel de Zumaya, two works in indigenous languages, the composer's own copies of works by Vivaldi and Corelli brought to the New World, and the fusion of traditional Mexican music.
